ADM Project Launch

ADM LaunchThe project was launched on August 10, 2015 and the launching ceremony was attended by over 3000 stakeholders, ranging from academicians to farmers. The gathering was addressed by the Hon’ble Agriculture Minister Shri Radha Mohan Singh; Shri Ram Kripal Yadav, Minister of State for Drinking Water and Sanitation; Dr S Ayyappan, Secretary DARE and DG, ICAR; Dr Martin Kropp, GM, ADM Institute, India; Dr R K Mittal, Vice Chancellor, Rajendra Agriculture University; Dr K. Alagsudaram; Dr Robert Easter, President Emeritus University of Illinois, USA; Dr Narender Ahuja, Director, ITRA; Dr Prasanta K Kalita, Director, ADM Institute, University of Illinois and Dr H S Gupta, DG BISA. It was highlighted that annually 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted globally. In India about 10% of the food produced is loss of which 6% is due to inadequate storage facilities.  University of Illinois with considerable experience in the post-harvest management has joined hands with renowned Indian institutes to develop technologies suitable for the region and build capacities of the farmers. The project will aim at two major cereal crops, namely rice and maize. The losses will be quantified for various stages of supply chain followed by identification of suitable grain processing techniques; quality evaluation and market penetration to establish supply chain paths to enhance food quality and reduce losses.


BISA signs MoU with ICRAF

BISA PhotoOn June 25, 2015, Borlaug Institute for South Asia (BISA) and The International Center for Research Agroforestry (ICRAF) signed an Memorandum of Understanding.

ICRAF is a leading international science based research and development institution in the tropics. The center responds to livelihood and environmental challenges through tree based systems in agricultural landscapes.

As ICRAF and BISA have common vision of a sustainable future and complementary missions, they wish to initiate effective cooperative relationships that will have positive impacts on small holder farmers, and recognize the value of strengthened institutional and program collaboration in this area and work towards achieving common goals of addressing poverty hunger, malnutrition, ecosystem management and climate change through testing and promotion of cop based agroforestry systems in South Asia.

Sixth Executive Committee Meeting of BISA Held

The sixth Executive Committee meeting of BISA was held at Ludhiana, Punjab, India on January 31, 2015. Dr HS Gupta, Director General, BISA and Member-Secretary, ExCo welcomed the members, and in particular Mr Anthony JC DeSa, Chief Secretary, Government of Madhya Pradesh; Mr R Rajagopal, Additional Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research & Education (DARE) and Secretary, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR); Mr Suresh Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Punjab; Dr BS Sidhu, Agriculture Commissioner, Government of Punjab; Mr AC Jain, Deputy Director – Agriculture and Dr JS Sandhu, Agriculture Commissioner, Government of India, to the meeting.

Dr Thomas A Lumpkin, Director General, CIMMYT and Chair, ExCo; and Dr S Ayyappan, Secretary, DARE & DG, ICAR and Co-Chair, ExCo made the opening remarks. Remarks were also made by Dr John W Snape, Chair, BoT, CIMMYT and Nicole L Birrell, Member, BoT, CIMMYT. Mr Anthony JC DeSa released a publication entitled “Major Accomplishments” brought out by BISA.

Dr Gupta made a detailed presentation on the research progress and future plans including infrastructure development. There was a healthy discussion on the role of Scientific Advisory Committee and its role in shaping research at BISA; fund raising efforts; BISA-ICAR work plan and other administrative issues. Dr Etienne Duveiller, CIMMYT Director-Research, South Asia, proposed the vote of thanks.
